Get fit for life tip #1: Ditch the car and walk.

Making a brisk 20-minute walk part of your daily routine can have a tremendous impact on your health.

Two recent studies highlight that the total volume of physical activity you undertake, spaced throughout the day, is associated with improved general health. You don’t need to work out at the gym for an hour three days a week – simply incorporating a brisk morning walk into your daily routine can have a big impact.

Maintaining the ability to move about in the world becomes crucially important as we grow older. Mobility enables us to stay socially and mentally engaged, cultivate strong relationships with family and friends, live independently for longer and continue to experience new adventures right up until the end.

In my book, Get Fit for Life: My Journey with Fitness, Health, and Aging, I share a few simple tricks that have helped me incorporate more walking into my day. For instance, whenever I receive or make a call, I stand up and pace around the room. It feels good to move my body, especially if I’ve been sitting for a while.
